In fitness, mobility is the ability to actively move a joint through its full, pain-free range of motion with control.
Unlike passive flexibility, when we stretch a muscle, the mobility requires a combination of flexibility, joint health, motor control, and strength to stabilize the body during movement.
Components of Mobility
–Flexibility vs. Mobility: Flexibility is how far a muscle can passively stretch; mobility is actively using that range of motion under tension.
–Stability: You need the muscular control to safely support your joints at the end of a movement.
–Coordination: The neuromuscular connection that allows your brain and muscles to move fluidly without compensation.
Why Mobility Matters
–Injury Prevention: Proper mobility corrects muscle imbalances and prevents joints from being forced into unsafe positions.
–Improved Performance: It allows you to execute exercises with proper form, reducing the risk of injury.
– Functional Aging: It maintains the physical stamina and independence needed to execute daily tasks without stiffness or pain.
We incorporate mobility into a client session, during warm-ups, cool-downs, or dedicated rest intervals. A favorite is the Cat-Cow combination, slowly build up to three minutes, and include a variety of hip openers.
