When the body has to balance it needs to recruit more of the smaller muscles to do the same job. The more muscles we can use during any exercise, the more calories we burn and therefore speeding up our metabolism.

While balancing on any unstable surface, our core muscles have to contract so we develop stronger hips and lower back muscles in the process.

Balance training can be added to standing exercises, sitting exercises and strength training with weights or resistance bands.

Standing on one leg is a great exercise to improve balance and the core muscle group. Try standing on one leg while you brush your teeth or chatting on the phone.
